Changes in Work & Car Use

If I work at several different locations, is ordinary commuting cover enough?

Short answerNot necessarily. Ordinary commuting often relates to travel to a permanent place of work; travelling between locations or to varying workplaces can require business use under some policies.

What should you do?

  • Describe whether you have one base, several fixed sites or changing locations.
  • Explain whether you travel between workplaces during the working day.
  • Ask which class of business use is appropriate.
  • Check whether carrying colleagues, tools or goods changes the requirement.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Do not assume 'commuting' covers every journey connected with employment.

Travelling between workplaces can require business use

Ordinary commuting commonly relates to travel to and from a regular place of work. If you travel between sites or to different work locations, describe those journeys to the insurer and check that the permitted use is wide enough.
