Changes in Work & Car Use

I have started parking my car on the road instead of in my garage — do I need to tell my insurer?

Short answerYou should tell your insurer if the place where the car is normally kept overnight has materially changed. Parking arrangements can be part of the information used to assess risk and price.

What should you do?

  • Contact the insurer or broker rather than waiting until renewal.
  • Explain whether the change is temporary or permanent.
  • Ask whether the premium, excess or terms will change.
  • Keep confirmation of any policy amendment.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

A one-off night on the road is not the same as a permanent change in normal parking.

Where the car is normally kept can be a policy detail

If the car is now routinely parked somewhere different overnight, check whether the insurer needs the policy updated. An occasional night on the road is not necessarily the same as a permanent change in where the vehicle is usually kept.
