Changes in Work & Car Use

I work from home now and no longer commute — should I change my car insurance?

Short answerTell your insurer or broker if your regular use of the car has changed. Removing commuting use may alter the policy details, although it will not necessarily reduce the premium.

What should you do?

  • Explain that you no longer drive to a permanent workplace.
  • Make sure social, domestic and pleasure use still matches how you drive.
  • If you occasionally travel for work, ask whether business use is required.
  • Update your annual mileage estimate if it has materially changed.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Do not remove commuting or business use if you still make journeys that require it.

Your commuting details should reflect how you actually use the car

If you no longer drive to work, the policy may need updating to remove commuting use or amend your annual mileage. Check with the insurer rather than assuming the change can wait until renewal.
