Changes in Work & Car Use

I occasionally drive to a client's house — do I need business-use car insurance?

Short answerQuite possibly. If you use your own car as part of your work rather than simply travelling to and from one normal workplace, you should ask your insurer about business-use cover.

What should you do?

  • Explain how often you visit clients and whether you carry passengers, samples or equipment.
  • Do not assume occasional journeys are automatically covered.
  • Check whether your employer requires evidence of business-use insurance.
  • Make sure the business-use class matches the journeys you actually make.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

The ABI states that if you use your car as part of your employment, you need to ensure you are covered for business use.

Client visits may fall outside ordinary commuting cover

Driving to a client, customer or other work location can amount to business use even if you do it only occasionally. Check the permitted use on your policy before making work-related journeys away from your normal place of work.
