I have changed jobs but still do exactly the same amount of driving — does my insurer need to know?

Short answerUsually, yes. Occupation is commonly one of the details used in motor insurance underwriting, so a change of job should be disclosed even if your mileage has not changed.

What should you do?

  • Give the new job title and describe the work accurately if the insurer asks.
  • Check whether the new role involves travel to more than one workplace or other business journeys.
  • Ask whether the change affects premium or terms.
  • Keep evidence of the update.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Do not choose a different occupation description simply because it produces a cheaper quote unless it genuinely describes your work.

Occupation can matter even when mileage does not change

Insurers may use occupation as one of the details on which the policy is based. If your job changes, check whether the insurer requires the new occupation to be recorded rather than assuming unchanged mileage means nothing needs updating.
