I give a colleague a lift to work and they pay towards petrol — does that affect my insurance?

What should you do?
- Be clear that any contribution is towards genuine journey costs rather than a fare for profit.
- Make sure your normal commuting use is covered.
- If lifts are organised regularly or through a paid service, ask the insurer specifically.
- Do not assume hire-and-reward cover is unnecessary if you are effectively charging passengers.
What can make a difference?
The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.
If in doubt, describe the arrangement to your insurer or broker before continuing.
Occasional cost-sharing between colleagues may be treated differently from carrying passengers for payment. Tell your insurer what you are doing if there is any doubt, particularly if the arrangement is regular or goes beyond sharing journey costs.
