Changes in Work & Car Use

I occasionally deliver something for my employer on the way home — am I covered?

Short answerThat journey may go beyond ordinary commuting because you are carrying out a task for your employer. Ask your insurer whether your business-use cover includes it.

What should you do?

  • Explain what you deliver and how often.
  • Tell the insurer whether the goods belong to your employer or customers.
  • Check any employer motor-insurance requirements.
  • Do not assume that doing it 'on the way home' makes it commuting.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

The purpose of the journey can matter as much as the route.

A work-related delivery can change the nature of the journey

Ordinary social, domestic and commuting cover may not include using the car for your employer’s business. Even an occasional delivery is worth checking with the insurer before you make the journey.
