My car was stolen from outside my house even though I told the insurer it was kept on the driveway — could that cause a problem?

Short answerIt may matter if the insurer was given inaccurate information about where the car is normally kept, but an occasional night on the road is different from a permanent change. The significance depends on what you were asked, what you answered and the policy terms.

What should you do?

  • Explain why the car was on the road that night and whether this was unusual.
  • Keep a copy of the proposal or policy schedule showing the parking information supplied.
  • If your usual parking place has changed, tell the insurer rather than waiting for a claim.
  • If cover is disputed, ask the insurer to explain how the parking information affected its decision.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Answer questions about overnight parking accurately at purchase and renewal.

An occasional change is different from routinely giving the insurer the wrong parking information

If the car is normally kept on the driveway but happened to be on the road that night, explain that accurately. If your usual overnight parking place had changed, the insurer may consider whether the policy information should have been updated.
