I lost my car keys — does comprehensive insurance normally cover replacement keys?

Short answerSome comprehensive policies include lost or stolen key cover, but it is not universal and limits or a separate excess may apply.

What should you do?

  • Check whether the policy covers replacement keys, locks, recoding and locksmith charges.
  • Ask whether using the key benefit counts as a claim for no-claims purposes.
  • If the key could identify the car, discuss security and recoding with the insurer.
  • Check whether key cover is an optional add-on rather than standard cover.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Policy wording matters more than the label 'comprehensive'.

Key cover is not automatically included with every comprehensive policy

Some policies include lost-key cover, some offer it as an extra and others may apply limits or an excess. Check whether replacement keys, locksmith costs and reprogramming are included before arranging the work.
