My car was damaged by a shopping trolley — can I claim on my car insurance?

What should you do?
- Photograph the damage and where the car was parked.
- If you know who caused the damage, keep their details.
- Ask the store whether relevant CCTV exists.
- Compare the repair cost with your excess before deciding whether to claim.
What can make a difference?
The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.
Third-party-only or third-party fire-and-theft policies generally do not provide the same accidental-damage cover for your own car.
Comprehensive cover may respond to accidental damage, but a small dent or scratch can cost less than the policy excess. Ask how a claim could affect your no-claims discount or future claims record before deciding whether to proceed.
