My annual mileage will be much higher than I estimated — when should I tell my insurer?

What should you do?
- Give a realistic revised annual figure rather than another optimistic estimate.
- Explain why mileage has changed, such as a new job or caring responsibilities.
- Check whether the change also alters commuting or business use.
- Keep confirmation of any updated policy details.
What can make a difference?
The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.
An estimate does not have to predict the future perfectly, but information supplied to the insurer should be honest and reasonable.
You do not need to predict mileage perfectly, but if you now expect to drive substantially more than you declared, contact the insurer and ask whether the estimate should be updated rather than waiting for renewal.
