I have fitted a dashcam — do I need to tell my insurer?

What should you do?
- Check whether the dashcam is permanently wired or installed in a way that alters the car.
- Ask whether your insurer offers any dashcam-related terms or requirements.
- Keep footage after an incident and preserve the original file.
- Do not assume footage proves liability without context.
What can make a difference?
The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.
A quick notification to your insurer or broker can remove uncertainty.
A dashcam may not affect cover with some insurers, but notification requirements differ. Check your insurer’s definition of modifications and accessories, particularly if the installation altered the vehicle or its wiring.
