Short answerWrong-fuel cover varies widely. Some comprehensive policies or add-ons cover draining and associated damage; others exclude misfuelling or limit what they pay.

What should you do?

  • If you realise before starting the engine, do not start it.
  • Check the policy for misfuelling, accidental damage and exclusions.
  • Contact the insurer or breakdown provider before authorising expensive work.
  • Keep invoices for fuel drainage, recovery and repairs.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Do not assume comprehensive insurance automatically includes misfuelling.

Wrong-fuel cover varies significantly

A policy may distinguish between draining the tank, recovery costs and damage caused after the engine has been started. Check the accidental-damage terms and any misfuelling exclusions before assuming the cost will be covered.
